On June 23, 2026, the P-ONE Collaboration and its global partners reached yet another major milestone: The first full-scale detector line of P-ONE, P-ONE-1, successfully completed its final pre-deployment shallow-water test done at the Granville Island Boatyard close to Vancouver.
A few weeks before, the line had been fully integrated with prior characterization and acceptance testing at TRIUMF. Read more about that process here. The main goals of the water testing included leakage control, functional testing, environmental monitoring, software testing, and firmware upgrades.
During the test, the detector line was submerged in cold saltwater for over 12 hours, with temperatures ranging from 13 to 17°C. It demonstrated full functionality throughout the test. Several hours of data were recorded, and the detector line passed all additionally conducted tests. In collaboration with our partner Ocean Networks Canada (ONC), we optimized several crucial mobilization steps and finalized the last details for the deployment of the first detector line, P-ONE-1, in the upcoming weeks. After the successful test, the detector line has been returned to storage at ONC, where the final steps before deployment are completed.
Together with ONC, the collaboration aims to deploy P-ONE-1, including the full acoustic calibration infrastructure on the seafloor, by the end of August 2026. Detector commissioning and initial data-taking activities will commence immediately following deployment.
The deployment campaign will also involve the installation of a new 30-km subsea cable extension from the original Cascadia Basin node to a new host location outside the recently established marine protected area Tang.ɢ̱wan – ḥačxwiqak – Tsig̱is.
